Report: Jenson Button may retire from Formula One
Button is reportedly set to announce his retirement at this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix
After 16 seasons in the sport, Jenson Button is reportedly set to retire from Formula One (F1).
According to Sky Sports, Button is set to announce his retirement from F1 at this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix. Reports state that Button's decision was influenced with a “mixture of doubt surrounding his 2016 race seat” as well as the “competitiveness” of the McLaren-Honda team.
Button told Sky Sports that he always wanted to end his career on a high note and hopes that he can come up with a firm decision before the Japanese Grand Prix.
"I always wanted to end my career on a high, but I also wanted it to be my decision when I retired. So it is a real tricky one...I need to get my head down and race then I can think about it a bit more before Suzuka. Hopefully we can decide what the best thing for the future is for the team and myself," said Button.
Sky Sports adds that Kevin Magnussen and Stoffel Vandoorne are the two leading contenders to replace Button at McLaren-Honda. As a review, Magnussen drove for McLaren in 2014 and was replaced by Fernando Alonso. On the other hand, Vandoorne is a McLaren junior driver and has dominated the GP2 championship this season.
The 35-year-old Button made his F1 debut with Williams in 2000. Before joining McLaren, he drove for Benetton, Renault, BAR, Honda and Brawn GP. Button is the 2009 F1 world champion, driving for Brawn GP.
