New developments surrounding Mercedes-Benz's upcoming midsize pickup recently emerged and will reportedly have three model variants and two diesel engines available.

According to CarAdvice, the new pickup will carry either the X-Class or Z-Class badge, though the former received more attention due to its tough and rugged connotation. Trim-wise, it is expected to be available as a base, mid or high specification model.

Turbo-diesel power, on the other hand, will come in the form of either a four cylinder or six cylinder engine. Nothing has been confirmed yet, though the four-cylinder engine is expected to be the 190 PS, 450 Nm 2.5-liter found in the Navara. Meanwhile, the six-cylinder motor may produce 255 PS along with 550 Nm of torque.

In terms of cabin design, it may also get similar interior styling from the current B-Class, along with an optional AMG exterior bodykit. There are no plans, however, to make a full-on AMG version of the upcoming pickup.

We previously reported that the Mercedes-Benz pickup will share some of its architecture with the current Nissan NP300 Navara. The German automaker however stated that it will be 'engineered and designed to fit the expectations of Mercedes-Benz customers'.

Beyond that, Renault will also be making their own pickup based on the Navara. It will be the French automaker's first stab at the midsize pickup segment and production will begin in 2016 at Nissan's Mexico plant in Cuernavaca.

Overall design of the pickup will be handled by Mercedes-Benz's van division, which also makes utility vehicles like the Sprinter, Vario and Vito.

The upcoming pickup will feature a double cab design and will be primarily aimed at buyers who will use the truck as daily vehicles or for commercial use. Target markets, on the other hand, will be Europe, Australia, South Africa and Latin America. It is slated for release at around 2020.
