Report: Ford mulling return of Ranger, Bronco for US market
Ford Ranger set to make a comeback in the US, Bronco to follow soon
The current T6 Ford Ranger is by far one of the most successful models the automaker has ever produced. Sold in over 200 markets worldwide and is one of the best selling pick-up truck in the Philippines, it appears that Ford Motor Co. Ltd. is pondering to bring back the midsize pick-up to the US market.
According to Automotive News, Ford is considering to build a new manufacturing facility at their Michigan Assembly Plant near Detroit to assemble the T6 Ranger stateside. If it all goes according to plan, the automaker will start assembling the midsize pick-up after production Focus and C-Max stops in 2018.
Aside from the Ranger, the Bronco may also make a return as Ford apparently filed a trademark application last February according to a government filing. The rumored Bronco will also be made in the soon-to-be-built manufacturing facility in Michigan.
The proposal will still need to be approved by the company's board of directors as well as the United Automobile Workers labor union but if it gets greenlit, it will give Ford a midsize pick up competitor in the US market which will go toe to toe with such models like the USDM Chevrolet Colorado, Toyota Tacoma and GMC Canyon.
As for the Ford Bronco, it will most likely be the US's version of the Everest which was designed by Ford Australia and shares the platform of the T6 Ranger. If the Bronco does make a comeback, it will enable Ford to compete alongside Jeep which makes rugged midsize off-roaders.
Originally, Ford discontinued sales of the Ranger in the US back in 2011 while the Bronco ceased production back in 1996.
