Kia has been teasing us for the last few months about a new, rear wheel drive sports car concept bound for the 2014 North American International Auto Show and, well, here it is: the Kia GT4 Stinger Concept.

The Kia GT4 Stinger was designed by Kia Design Center America as “a 2+2 sports car that can turn heads as a daily driver while also being right at home on the track”. Kia calls the GT4 as their “wild child”, following in the treadmarks of the Track'ster concept.

The Kia grille sits low for improved cooling and cold air induction, fed by the carbon fiber splitter. Vertical LED headlamps take care of illumination and highlight the long front bonnet of the car. The long front bonnet, the low slung profile and the fastback rear give the GT4 its sporting credentials. The car measures 4310mm long, 1890mm wide, 1250mm tall and a has a wheelbase of 2619mm.

Inside, Kia designers gave the car an interior that is “purposeful in design and practical in nature”. The car has aluminum door handles, lightweight doors, a D-shaped steering wheel, red LED illumination for the gauge panels with a large tachometer and gear indicator. Kia also gave the car transparent A-pillars for better visibility.

Powering the GT4 Stinger is a tuned version of the 2.0 liter turbocharged and direct injected (T-GDI) inline-4 found in the Optima. In the GT4, it makes 315 horsepower and is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission. A racing version of the engine in the Optima that was raced in the Pirelli World Challenge makes up to 400 horsepower. For stopping power, the Kia GT4 has 15 inch Brembo Gran Turismo brakes.

Kia says there are currently no plans to bring the concept to production. However, if Kia were to produce it, the company has a history of delivering production vehicles that bear a strong resemblance to the concept.

“It’s a totally selfish design,” said Tom Kearns, KDCA design chief . “The design team at KCDA is full of petrolheads and enthusiasts, and the GT4 Stinger is the perfect car for that kind of crowd.”
