Mercedes takes the covers off of the 2015 AMG GT

After months of waiting, Mercedes-Benz has finally unveiled the AMG GT, a sportscar poised to replace the gullwing-door SLS AMG which ceased production this year.

The 2015 Mercedes-AMG GT measures 4546 mm in length, 1939 mm in width and 1289 mm in height. It was designed by a team led by Gorden Wagener, Daimler AG's Vice President of Design, and developed entirely in house by AMG.

Wagener describes the Mercedes-AMG GT as a “sports car in its purest form” and embodies the “spirit of the glorious Mercedes sports cars from the past.”

The front fascia of the vehicle has a three-dimesional diamond radiator grill infused with the Mercedes-Benz emblem and AMG lettering. The Mercedes-AMG GT is equipped with LED headlamps with daytime running lamps, side lights, indicators and three high-beam reflectors. It also has a front splitter and large air intakes to optimize cooling.

The side profile of the Mercedes-AMG GT is designed with a dome-shaped, arched roof line and frameless doors. The automaker says the lines seen on the side of the vehicle creates a “sense of lightness.”

The rear of the vehicle is infused with narrow taillights that is incoporated with sequential turn signals. The Mercedes-AMG GT also has a black diffuser with tailpipes that are integrated to the bumper and a trim strip in matt iridium silver. Moreover, the luggage compartment capacity of the Mercedes-AMG GT is 350 liters.

Inside, the vehicle has an 'aviation design' theme as seen on the round air-con vents that look like the dials on a fighter jet. It has a carbon fiber interior that features a three-spoke steering wheel with aluminum paddle shifters, 'ARTICO' man-made leather/black fabric, silver chrome, matte carbon fiber, high-gloss carbon fiber and black diamond or matte silver fiberglass trim. Adding to its interior features is the free-standing central display located above the four air-con vents. Mercedes-Benz says it displays a scren diagonal of 7-inches and increases to 8.4-inches if 'COMAND Online' is specified.

The Mercedes-AMG GT is equipped with two turbochargers which are not mounted on the outside of the cylinder banks, but rather inside the V configuration, the automaker dubbed it as a “hot inside V.”

The entry level AMG GT is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that delivers 468 PS at 6000 rpm with 600 Nm of torque at 1600-5000 rpm. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and can accelerate from 0-97 km/h in 4 seconds with a top speed of 304 PS.

On the other hand, the AMG GT S is also powered by the same engine, but generates more power with 517 PS @ 6250 rpm and 650 Nm of torque @ 1750-4750 rpm. It can go from 0-97 km/h in 3.8 seconds with a top speed of 311 km/h.
